In the heart of Bankside, London, Timber Square by Landsec is taking shape — an ambitious campus that redefines sustainable architecture. The two buildings, Ink and Print, build on the historic legacy of the original printing works and combine the site’s industrial character with a contemporary approach to urbanism and ecology.

For the Ink building, So Concrete has created a set of functional elements using high-performance concrete (HPC), blending aesthetics with practicality while staying true to low-carbon construction principles.

The key features include four large-scale planters designed for tree planting, along with integrated planters in the seating area that complete the public space and foster interaction between people and nature. Here, 3D printing technology enabled the creation of dual-purpose elements — each planter also serves as a bench support. The elements were designed by Bennetts Associates and Jolie Studio.

Robotic fabrication allowed for a subtle, organic morphology, referencing natural growth processes while minimizing material consumption. Thanks to parametric design, the volume of concrete was optimized without compromising on strength or durability.

The concrete elements at Timber Square are more than architectural additions — they embody a new approach to urban space: one that is created differently, with respect for the site’s history, its people, and the planet.
